This figure was made by the Fang tribal group, which lived in Gabon on the west coast of Africa. The Fang made these serene guardian figures to watch over the relics of their ancestors which were used to bring good luck, protect from misfortune and smell out witchcraft. Fang heads provided inspiration for many artists in the early 20th century, including Jacob Epstein and Henry Moore.
