1880-81In 1881, when propriety was everything, the aggressive realism of The Little Dancer prompted great criticism. By displaying the sculpture in a glass case, the artist alluded to display methods of natural history museums and may have been questioning whether a sculpture of meticulous realism could still be categorised as ‘art’. This leads to an interesting reflection of the Robert and Lisa Sainsbury Collection which displays ‘archeological objects’ alongside ‘art’ and in so doing asks the viewer to question their definition of ‘art’.
