| | MaskThere are a number of striking masks from Africa in the Collection of which this Ivory Coast mask is a colourful and expressive example. The features are strong and pronounced, enhanced by the red, white and blue paint decoration. However, in comparison to many masks made by the We people, which often have exaggerated features, horns, tusks and protruding eyes, this example is quite restrained. Quills between the lips become the teeth, whilst perforations around the chin suggest a former attachment of bells.Late 19th/early 20th century
