Red-Blue chair,
Gerritt Rietveld
a replica (1968) of the original c.1918 made by GA van de Groenekan
Painted and stained wood
h. 85.5 cm
UEA 31220Rietveld has used overlapping planes separated by colour to create a sense of open and continuous space in this work. Commenting on the chair, Rietveld said:
‘The construction is attuned to the parts to ensure that no part dominates or is subordinate to the others. In this way, the whole stands freely and clearly in space, and the form stands out from the material.’ Fellow artist Van Doesburg described Rietveld’s Red-Blue chair as a ‘slender space animal’.
