Isokon Long Chair, 1936
Marcel Breuer
Laminated birch
h. 81.3 cm
UEA 31161Marcel Breuer and Walter Gropius came to England in 1934 following the rise of the Nazis in Germany. They lived in the Isokon flats in Lawn Road, Hampstead and both designed for Isokon. The Isokon Long Chair, designed by Breuer in 1936, elegantly exploits the structural strength and lightness of laminated plywood. Some 1000 Long Chairs were sold before the war and the chair is still in production to this day « Back to collection listing
