Her striking photographs focus on the human figure in its natural setting, capturing moments in the lives of ordinary people and documenting the rapidly changing world of the last 70 years. On display you will find more than 150 original prints, including black-and white street photography and colourful pictures of contemporary life, together with jewel-like Polaroids and vintage studio portraits.

Born into a Jewish family in Knigsberg, East Prussia (now Kaliningrad) in 1924, Bohm was sent to school in the UK in 1939 to escape the threat of Nazism. She studied photography at Manchester College of Technology and went on to establish a successful portrait studio in Manchester. In the late 1940s, in the course of many visits to the artists colony of Ascona in Switzerland, she discovered a love for open-air photography, and soon abandoned studio work to focus on street photography.

Throughout her life Bohm has travelled widely, photographing the changing face of post-war Europe, the USA, Israel and the USSR. During the 1980s on a visit to the Far East she began to work with colour film, which she felt gave her a new life in photography. She went on to publish books of colour photographs of visits to Egypt and Venice, and has continued to work in colour ever since.

The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue, published by Philip Wilson Publishers and available from the Sainsbury Centre Gallery Shop.

The exhibition was curated for Manchester Art Gallery by Dorothy Bohms daughter, Monica Bohm-Duchen, together with consultant curator Colin Ford, CBE.
