Mother & Child

From Robert & Lisa Sainsbury Collection

1932
Henry Moore
Green Hornton stone
Height: 91.4 cm
Acquired: 1933
UEA 82

Henry Moore was transfixed by world art in the British Museum and by the impact of artworks that did not attempt to re-create real life. Robert Sainsbury was equally excited by non-western, non-naturalistic art. In this work, you can see that Moore was influenced by objects similar to those displayed alongside it at the Sainsbury Centre. Try comparing the smooth curves and piercing eyes of the reliquary head or the way the hands are carved on the Fishermens god.
