Llama effigy

From Robert & Lisa Sainsbury Collection

AD 1400 1532
Peru
Silver or silver alloy
Height: 23.2 cm
Acquired: 1962
UEA 150

The Incas are well known for their advanced culture, geometric architecture and violent control of an empire. Llamas provided the Incas with milk, meat and leather and had a central place in their religion, and this effigy is likely to have been placed in a grave alongside a human sacrifice. It is hollow and made from several pieces of sheet metal the joints burnished to disguise them.
