Female nude with arms raised

From Robert & Lisa Sainsbury Collection

1907
Pablo Picasso
Gouache
62.9 x 46.4 cm
Acquired: 1939
UEA 8

This work is an early study for the central figure in Picassos watershed painting Les Demoiselles dAvignon, a cornerstone of 20th century art. If you look carefully, the eyes, hips, thighs, calves, indeed almost every element, are described by the same quarter-circle.

Female nude with arms raised has recently been conserved. Find out more about conservation at the Centre.
