Head of an Oba

From Robert & Lisa Sainsbury Collection

Benin, Nigeria
Early 16th Century
Brass, iron
Height: 23cm
Acquired: 1966
UEA 232

The Benin kingdom lay on the borders of modern-day Nigeria and Ghana in west Africa. The Benin were great warriors and also great artists. Their brass and bronze heads and ivory carvings count as some of the finest works of world art.

Much of Benin art and history was lost when Benin city was sacked by the British in 1897, but research suggests this head was made for the funeral of Ozolua, one of the greatest Benin 'Oba' or warrior kings, who died in 1505.
