Female figure with folded arms

From Robert & Lisa Sainsbury Collection

Attributed to the Goulandris Master
Greece, Cycladic
2700-2400 BC
Marble
Height: 27.6 cm
Acquired: 1961
UEA 342

A number of mysterious and beautifully proportioned early bronze age (Early Cyclades) marble figures have been found on the Greek islands that lie between Athens and Crete. Their function and meaning are not known but the skill needed to make them can be plainly seen. These serene figures particularly inspired modernist artists such as Henry Moore (see Mother and Child for further information on Moore).
