The collection is renowned for its collection of chairs by European and American 20th century architects and designers. In order to assemble a core teaching collection representing key design landmarks, replicas were acquired when originals were too expensive or no longer available. The collection currently spans the 1920s through to the 1960s and includes original pieces by Alvar Aalto, Sergei Chermayeff, Harry Bertoia and Charles Eames.
A large body of furniture was given to the collection in 1970 by Jack and Molly Pritchard, who had in the early 1930s established the firm Isokon. In 1933 the Pritchards commissioned architect Wells Coates to design the strikingly modern, International Style, Isokon Flats in Lawn Road, Hampstead, London. Many of the pieces in the collection were designed for Isokon by migrs from the Bauhaus to whom Jack offered refuge, such as Walter Gropius and Marcel Breuer.
