Emile Gall
Blow out Cameo glass
h. 36.8 cm
UEA 21017Emile Gall gained international acclaim for his work in Art Nouveau glass and furniture and was awarded a gold medal for a display at the 1900 Paris Exposition Universelle. He founded the association of makers known as the Ecole de Nancy, of which he was president until his death in 1904.
Gall developed a form of cameo glass deriving from oriental prototypes, of which this vase is a fine example. Cameo glass is made when layers of glass are carved and then etched to leave a relief pattern in which the coloured layers appear through the variable thickness of the design.
