Textile has played an important role in the cultural identity of these countries and each of the artists is using that textile history to investigate the importance of specific cultural identity and trans-cultural influences in their work.
Each of the selected artists has made new work for the exhibition reflecting the social, political and utilitarian history of textile within the context of shifting experiences of culture and tradition. These works will include the contemporary use of traditional techniques and materials knit, tapestry, embroidery, explorations of new materials and technology, large architectural installations, performance work, video, narrative based textiles and decorative textiles.
The exhibition is curated by Professor Lesley Millar and is the outcome of a 3-year research project, 'Transition and Influence', for the University College for the Creative Arts (UCCA).
Cloth & Culture Now is at the Sainsbury Centre from 29 January - 1 June 2008 and tours to the Whitworth Art Gallery, University of Manchester in the Autumn of 2008.
The Sainsbury Centre is very grateful for the support received from the embassies of Estonia, Finland, Japan, Latvia and Lithuania.
