On Location: Art, Space and Place in the 1960s

23rd Sep 2008 - 14th Dec 2008

The late 1960s witnessed a transformation in the relationship between the artwork, gallery and viewer that contunues to influence artists working today.

From the mid 1960s artists in Europe, the Americas and Japan began to rethink the exhibition space and how their work related to locations both inside and outside the gallery. Rather than simply abandoning the gallery, many artists resolved to create work that brought the outside in, confronting viewers with materials drawn from specific sites. In turn, viewers were invited to reconsider their own locations, and their own relationship with the world around them.

The exhibition includes works made from a highly unusual range of materials. Artists now used maps and charts, technologies new to the 1960s such as the Telex, as well as organic materials lifted from the landscape, for example rocks, soil and even turf.

On Location features work from the 1960s and early 1970s by importat artists including Conrad Atkinson, Iain and Ingrid Baxter, the Boyle Family, Nikolaus Lang, Robert Smithson, Alan Sonfist and Robert Watts, alngside installations by Bill Vazan and Jochen Gerz.

The exhibition is curated by Dr Simon Dell, Head of the School of World Art Studies and Museology at UEA.
