Art on the hoardings

From Wednesday 16 March, you will be able to see some large-scale art work at the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, despite the fact that the gallery is closed for building work and refurbishment.

The Sainsbury Centre has become a building site, surrounded by safety fencing and hoardings, but the gallery has turned this to their advantage by commissioning a local artist to fill the boards with art. The project has been made possible due to the generosity of Kier Eastern, the main contractor working on the building project.
Nichola Johnson, director of the Sainsbury Centre, said: The staff at the Sainsbury Centre really are missing the art so it's great that Kier have helped us find a way over the next few months, to showcase new work from the region, even though we're closed.
Graham Howe, divisional director from Kier Eastern, commented We are extremely pleased to be working on the Sainsbury Centre. Having worked with the designers and staff over the past few months we appreciate how important the visual environment is to them. We are really pleased to be involved in supporting the art in this way.
The first artist to adorn the boards will be Becca Smith, whose drawings of the figure in motion recently transformed glass panels at The Forum in the city centre. Becca said This is a brilliant opportunity for me to scale up my work and the project is really pushing me to explore new ideas and techniques. It's been a very cold time to be working outside though, now I know what the people on the building site have to contend with!
