As part of the Out There project all of the eight artists will visit UEA for a two day research trip. As well as meeting Sainsbury Centre staff and engaging in discussions about the practical aspects of the project, the artists will spend time walking around the parkland, getting a feel for the place and selecting a site where they would like to make their work when the residencies begin in mid-June.

The second Out There site visit took place on the 23rd and 24th March. Claire Morgan visited us with Machiko Agano, who came over from Osaka, Japan. As with the first visit, the artists were enthusiastic about the project and began forming some interesting ideas for works they might make in response to the site.

Machikos concerns about the changing environmental conditions in Japan, the heavy rainstorms, the tornados and the recent earthquakes, and the impact this is having on Japanese wildlife, have all influenced her ideas for a work she would like to make at UEA. She is interested in making a hanging piece and, after looking at several trees which were contenders for this, she finally found the perfect tree in the form of the oldest oak on campus, situated just at the back of the Sainsbury Centre crescent wing. Machiko's work will have no physical impact on the tree, but will hang gently from the branches.

Whilst our artists have so far selected sites quite visible at, or near, the front of the Sainsbury Centre, Claire was interested in sites much further into the woods. The idea of hanging a work in the trees, which people have to find as they walk through the grounds appealed to Claire. With her interest in art forms which decay or change with time, the slightly wilder area of the woods seems like a perfect place to site her work.
