Out There

Elisa Bracher

Elisa Bracher is a Brazilian artist. She trained as a metal engraver in the 1980s and continues to make black and white, 2D work, based on this technique. Brachers work was shown at the Sainsbury Centre in 2004 as part of the exhibition Latin American Art: Contexts and Accomplices.

In the 1990s Bracher began to work with wood, producing monumental outside sculptures from whole tree trunks. Examples of these works are sited in Sao Paulo city centre. For Out There Bracher explored ways in which she could use the hoarding surrounding the building works of the Sainsbury Centre. Using specially created woodblocks she chiselled out designs, applied red and black printing ink, which was then covered with long strips of paper. The printed paper was applied to the hoarding with a paste, which caused a deliberate yellowing and hardening of the paper.

Bracher is interested in processes and techniques of making artworks and her second piece reflects this. Using the woodblocks, she created a tensioned sculpture. Looming out from the ground, the four main elements lean back using each other as balance; the fifth, smaller, block sits precariously, floating in-between.
