Out There
2nd Jul 2005 - 29th Aug 2005
Out There brought together artists from Britain, Australia, Africa, Brazil, Japan, India and Poland, for a three week residency. They were invited to make site specific works in the woods and parkland next to the Sainsbury Centre. The works can now be seen in the grounds of the UEA campus.

Out There grew from a desire to extend the world art focus of the Robert and Lisa Sainsbury Collection into the parkland, beyond the building. It also provided an ideal opportunity to work with artists during the Centre’s closure period for building works. Rather than curate an exhibition of existing sculpture, the Sainsbury Centre team wanted to bring the artists to Norwich to work alongside one another and to make new works.
While some of the artists were experienced in making work outside, for others it was their first foray into the landscape. Though each of the artists makes very different work, they share an engagement with specific locations and materials and an interest in the use of organic or found materials.
If you visit the park and the exhibition regularly during July and August, you will find that the exhibition changes with each encounter. The art works will grow or decay and show the marks of their exposure to all the weather conditions a British summer brings.
