Development Project

It is an exciting period of change for the Sainsbury Centre, as a major project to configure the building is currently underway. This work will include the renovation of the space at the east end of the Centre, relocating the shop and providing more space to display the permanent collections. It will also lead to the creation of a large suite of temporary exhibition galleries downstairs. The new gallery spaces will be launched on 14 September 2013, with a major exhibition displaying the best art of Norfolk and Suffolk throughout history. Masterpieces: Art and East Anglia, will celebrate the rich and unique artistic heritage of the region, with works from across the visual arts from the prehistoric period to the present day.

The Crescent Wing ramp and lobby will be closed, along with the Lower Gallery and the Reserve. This also affects the Meeting Room, Schools Room, SRU Seminar Room and part of the Link gallery which will be inaccessible.

The Link gallery will mostly remain open, although a temporary wall will be in place to close off the Link corridor between the Store Window and the Reserve. The Store Window and Link Bay will become the new home for certain objects from the Reserve. Other objects can be accessed through prior arrangement with our Collections team.

School groups should now enter our main ground floor Gallery Entrance, which will only be affected when the new Reception Desk is being constructed. During this time entrance may be limited to the WAM School Entrance.

Our Shop will remain open and functioning, although towards the end of the work it will be relocated to the Conservatory.

The temporary exhibition gallery at the east end (East Gallery) will be closing during this time. A new blind system will be installed and new display cases will be installed to house a new display of objects from the Robert and Lisa Sainsbury Collection. The glass barrier on the south side will be removed, to create a larger, more open space.

The new suite of Lower Galleries are scheduled to re-open in time for our new Masterpieces: Art and East Anglia exhibition this September.
