Standing Woman
1959
Alberto Giacometti
Bronze, edition of 2
h. 132.1 cm
UEA 48The Sainsburys had known and bought works from Alberto Giacometti for several years before they acquired this major sculptural work. Standing Woman is a magnificent example of the standing figures for which Giacomettis post-war work is renowned. The artist would energetically have pushed and manipulated the plaster model from which this bronze is cast, to form a tall, elongated figure that appears to stand and look with particular intensity.
