Lisa Sainsburys collection of modern pots began in the 1950s, when she and Sir Robert first purchased work by Lucie Rie. Their friendship with Rie stimulated an interest in contemporary ceramics and led them to acquire a large body of work by Hans Coper. The works by Rie and Coper that form the Collections foundation are usually displayed in the Sainsbury Centre Crescent Wing reception.

Over the years that followed, Lisa Sainsbury expanded the Collection to include pieces by potters such as Bernard Leach, Shoji Hamada, Janet Leach and James Tower as well as works by the pupils of Rie and Coper such as Ian Godfrey, Ewen Henderson and John Ward. Lisa Sainsbury continues to collect the work of younger potters and has given particular support in recent years to the work of Rupert Spira. The Collection now includes over 400 works by 27 artists. The ceramics are complemented by works carved from wood by artists such as Steve Howlett.
