Head of a male Shinto deity
Late Heian period (AD 897-1185)
Japan
Wood, traces of dark red lacquer
h 27.5 cm
UEA 956The 11th 12th century head of a male Shinto deity almost certainly comes from a whole figure squatting in Japanese style on the floor. Carved from a single block of wood, Shinto deities or kami were made by craftsmen whose technique represented a folk-tradition which existed up to the nineteenth century.
