Sultan Jamshid Qutb Shah of Golconda
c. 1680
India, Deccan, Golconda
Opaque watercolour and gold on paper
h. 20.0 cm
UEA 537The collection of 31 finely-detailed Indian paintings (Indian miniatures) spans a period of over 300 years (1525 1850). Primarily painted in opaque watercolours on paper, the term miniature does not refer to their scale but originally referred to the use of red lead, or minium. Some of these works were painted for the Hindu rulers of Rajasthan or the Mughal Court in Dehli. The Collection also includes Pahari paintings of the Punjab Hills and works from the Southern Indian Deccan.
