UEA 1188The hanging scroll paintings within the Collection were commissioned by priests for Buddhist temples, and by or for the court nobility and the leisured class. The emphasis is on the religious, the literary and the courtly. All are in one of three formats � the vertical hanging scroll, the horizontal handscroll or the folding album - and were designed for private rather than public enjoyment.
