Standing Jizo Bosatsu
Kamakura period (AD 1185-1333)
Japan
Wood, metal, glass
h. 36.5 cm
UEA 1255

The recently acquired Standing Jizo Bosatsu beautifully illustrates the importance of Buddhist worship in Japan. Standing upon a lotus flower in front of an elaborately decorated screen, the figure of Buddha wears a delicately sculpted robe and a gold necklace hung with beads. A variety of materials is used including gold, glass, crystals and wood. Prior to entering the Collection this work was privately owned and would have served for intimate worship in a domestic setting.
