Figurine
Final Jömon (c. 1000-400 BC)
Japan
Earthenware
h. 19.0 cm
UEA 1091

The word Jömon is used to describe a Japanese art period from 10,500-400BC. Jömon figurines, or dogü, range in size, form and decoration. Most figurines have been found broken, and the regularity of the fractures at the hip, neck and shoulders suggests that this damage may have been intentional. These figures were of ritual significance, but their original roles, whether in medical, fertility or sacrificial ritual, remain uncertain.
