Mythical beast
Han Dynasty, 206 BC-AD 220
China
Earthenware, pigment
h 43.7 cm
UEA 1157This carved Chinese earthenware mythical beast originates from the Han Dynasty (206 BC 220 AD). White pigment covers much of the figure whilst traces of red pigment can be seen in the nostrils and mouth. Many Chinese works in the collection have lost their painted surfaces, and the fact that this was regarded as unimportant by the Sainsburys reflects their interest in form rather than surface decoration.
