Pre-Columbia

Reclining ballplayer
Formative period (c. 1000 BC)
Mexico
Terracotta, traces of red pigment
h. 17.0 cm
UEA 672

This ceramic figure relates to the Mesoamerican ballgame, a highly ritualised game which was played by two sides with a solid rubber ball. The consequences of losing were politically or religiously significant and could result in death for the losing team. This figure is depicted in the resting pose, reclining with one hand on the ground, and is one of the oldest known representations of a hip-ballplayer.
