Head-dress ornament in the form of a fox
AD 1-800
Peru, Piura valley, Vicus: Moche style
Gilt copper, shell, green stone
l. 12.7cm
UEA 599This fox head is made from several sheets of copper or copper alloy with copper wire whiskers and gilt copper disks dangling from the ears. The green colour of the piece is the result of the corrosion of the copper. The Moche people carved wood or modelled or painted on pottery showing animal heads being worn as forehead ornaments, however, whether those wearing the head-dresses were mythological figures or members of the Moche elite is not clear. « Back to collection listing
