Anthropomorphic 'axe'
Late 3rd or 2nd millennium BC
India, Ganges valley
Copper
h. 23.5 cm
UEA 880

Belonging to a series of distinctive copper and copper alloy objects found largely in the Ganges Valley, this axe is likely to have been made for ritual purposes. The objects found include several types of axe, of which the most spectacular is anthropomorphic in form, meaning that an object has been created to have a human-like appearance.
