The Sainsbury Collection contains both objects and paintings from the Indian sub-continent. Alongside bronze religious figures, more functional objects are represented such as the copper anthropomorphic axe from the late third or second millennium BC.

The collection of thirty-one Indian miniatures spans a period of over three hundred years (1525 - 1850). Some of these works were painted for the Hindu rulers of Rajasthan or for the Mughal Court in Delhi. They include portraits of princes, images of animals and depictions of courtly pastimes.
